Lufthansa Editorial Assignment for Planet Magazine

Lufthansa's Planet Magazine asked that I photograph Orlando Wong, CEO of Able Freight; one of Lufthansa’s freight customers. This editorial assignment required portraits and reportage of agricultural clients that raise strawberries for export via Lufthansa air freight, hence the combination of  Photojournalism and Portrait work.

They wanted the photographic look to be consistent with my website, which meant, they wanted me to do what I do. When clients tell me they that it always feels good.

Like most magazine assignments,  I did not know what to expect, but I had an idea for the portrait of Orlando in the field of strawberries. I wanted a soft natural light look to the portrait.

We used an 8x8 ft. silk mounted on a stand for the portraits and some speed lights to fill-flash the photojournalism aspects of the assignment. This editorial assignment was important because it held the potential for more work in the future if I did a great job, so I  brought cordless mobile lights just in case the silk didn’tt work out.

I have since done more assignments for them. The lens and camera setup was a Nikon D810 with a 24mm-70mm Nikon zoom lens; my standard workhorse lens.   We also shot to an iPad so we could see the images in real-time, and we placed clouds in the background because the image was not as interesting without them.

My clients expect a certain amount of digital skills from the photographers and even though some of the images were photojournalistic, my commercial clients expect a photographer to bring to the table more than just the bare minimum. We have to bring more to the table.

For these images, nothing but the portrait was set up. However, I would have arranged the images if it was required since editorial and commercial clients don’t have the budget for me to wait around until I find just the right moment. On this editorial assignment, everything just came into place.

I love editorial assignments that call for mixed skill sets and intense work schedules because I like feeling tired at the end of the day. See more of my editorial photography
